◊  MOVING HOME: AN ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE
« back

Moving home can be an absolute nightmare, and even more so if you haven’t prepared well in advance.

Moving home - What a nightmare!
It is not just the concern that some items make get lost or broken, but the disruption to family life, having to get used to another place, and, quite possibly, new people as well; even in the best-case scenario, it is a tiresome and almost always painful process. However, if you plan everything conscientiously and get help from professionals, everything will undoubtedly go more smoothly, and, while it remains tiresome experience, it can be easily organized and carried out.

The first step when moving home is to choose the company to carry it out, if you have decided not to do it yourself. When selecting the firm, don’t hesitate to look among the professional companies, get in touch with several of these and ask for a quote. The company should send a person to your apartment to see what needs to be transported, how your belongings can be removed from the home, and where they are to be taken. Only when in possession of all the facts can they advise you and provide you with an appropriate estimate, and, in this way, you can avoid situations where, in the middle of a move, they refuse to transport and old or cumbersome piece of furniture as they don’t have the appropriate materials to lower it down onto the street, or because it is not included in the overall estimate.

What should I do
Make sure they have the correct authorizations to carry out the move, and this does not only mean that their workers are correctly insured, but that they have also received authorization from your town council to occupy the public roadway, as, if this is not the case, the municipal authorities can bring the whole operation to a standstill, leaving you with half your furniture in your house and the other half out on the street.

Ask how they plan to unload the furniture, the vehicles and tools to be used, and how long the think they will need to use the elevators in the building. Explain the situation to your neighbors in both your new and old buildings, and ask for their understanding, however, remember to do so in advance, appearances are very important in personal relationships, and even more so if you are going to force your neighbors to walk up flights of stairs to get to their apartments, or inconvenience them with noise at the main doorway.

One factor often overlooked during a move is the children, we are so caught up in the purely physical work involved that we forget that the children are about to change their environment, and, quite possibly, their friends and school. As such, it is important to tell them about it well in advance, explain why you are moving home. If possible, take them to see the new area a few days beforehand, as this way, they will be more prepared and feel part of the process, rather than left out of it entirely.

It is much better to hire a professional to take care of the move, it may look easy initially, but dismantling furniture without causing any damage is no easy task, using the staircase to take them out of the building is quite often impossible and trying to do so through a window is dangerous indeed, if you do not have the proper resources.

Make sure that your furniture fits into your new home, it may be a painful decision to make, but if the piece of furniture doesn‘t fit, it is probably better to leave it where it is and try to persuade the new occupant to purchase it.

If you are going to pack the items yourself, remember not to overload the boxes, as they can split open, thus breaking the contents.

Number the boxes, do not write the contents on them. It is better not to indicate what each box contains, as this only makes a thief’s job easier, number them instead, and have a list with the number, content and room in the new house where they are to go. This will make easier to get back to normal in the new house and means there is less risk when moving the boxes, packages, etc.
